Stefan Yanev

Born on 1 March 1960 in the village of Popovitsa, Plovdiv Region, Bulgaria.


Director of Defense Policy Directorate, and of Security and Defense Policy Directorate, Ministry of Defense; defense attaché, Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria, Washington D.C., the USA.


Some positions held from 2003 onwards: Head of Defense Policy and Analyses Division, MoD Defense Policy Directorate; Head of Transformations Department, NATO Defense Against Terrorism Center of Excellence (DAT COE), Ankara, Turkey.


Between 1998 and 2000:  analyst, PfP/Partnership for Peace Coordination Cell’s Planning and Programming Section, Mons, Belgium. Appointment as Senior Assistant Chief, Strategies and Doctrines Division with the Defense and Armed Forces Planning Department.


1996: expert, International Cooperation Directorate, Ministry of Defense.


Graduate of the G. Dimitrov Higher National Military Artillery School in Shoumen (1983). Further training and education: G. S. Rakovski Military Academy, Sofia; National War College with the National Defense University, Washington D.C., the USA.


Until 11 May 2021: Security and Defense Secretary of Bulgaria’s Head of State.


Deputy Prime Minister for Law and Order and Security and Minister of Defense as a member of a caretaker government in 2017.


Languages: fluent in English, German and Russian. Married, with two children.
