“Bulgaria firmly supports Moldova’s European integration. We highly appreciate the political will of the Moldovan institutions to continue to march with determination along the path of reforms, rule of law and consolidation of democratic institutions despite all the challenges arising from Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.” This was stated by Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov when he called on President Maia Sandu in Chișinău.
Rossen Jeliazkov expressed gratitude for the consistent commitment of the Moldovan leadership to reforms and noted that Bulgaria continues to rank among the most active supporters for the European integration of Moldova and Ukraine, based on the principle of their own merits.
President Maia Sandu thanked the Prime Minister for Bulgaria’s positive assessment of Moldova’s performance on the path to EU accession and for the support that the Bulgarian government lends to the country in its European integration.
The Prime Minister thanked President Maia Sandu for the constructive approach and support of the Moldovan authorities in the transformation of the former University of Taraclia into a full-fledged branch of the Angel Kanchev University of Rousse. The Prime Minister emphasized that over 200 applications for enrolment had already been lodged which proves that the opening of the branch was timely and necessary for ethnic Bulgarians. “The opening of the branch in Taraclia laid the foundation of sustainable Bulgarian educational and cultural presence in the region – and that is important not just for Moldova but also for our compatriots in neighboring Ukraine,” the Prime Minister said.
President Maia Sandu emphasized the rising number of enthusiasts willing to study Bulgarian. She said that she was delighted by the great number of applicants for enrolment in the branch of the Angel Kanchev University of Rousse.
The two leaders discussed the bilateral relations, inter alia, that are based on long-standing ties, shared values and the strong role of the Bulgarian community in Moldova as a bridge of friendship between the two countries.
Rossen Jeliazkov and Maia Sandu agreed on the need for Europe to fight, as strongly as it can, against Russian hybrid attacks and disinformation. The two leaders condemned, again, the Russian aggression in Ukraine. For his part, Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov noted that Bulgarian support for Ukraine would continue in the period of the country’s postwar recovery.
