The Roudozem-Xanthi border-crossing checkpoint and the motorway to it on the territory of Bulgaria are fully ready for operation. The government will intercede with the Greek authorities to open it at least for passenger cars and tourist travel next year at the latest. This is what Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov said to journalists in Chepelare where he attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the completely renovated downtown area and a street for pedestrians only. “You know that we face bilateral matters that are currently being resolved, therefore this issue must be taken out of the context and its association with other bilateral issues in order to be resolved in the best way for both parties,” he added.
The Prime Minister said that the Roudozem bypass is soon to be completed. Next week, a working meeting will be held with the mayor of the town to review the updated terms of reference for the road and its financing. The allocation is to be made next year. “Within this year lots in the third lane in three sections will be completed: one of the sections is before Chepelare and the other two are on the Chepelare-Smolyan road and possibly next year a tendering procedure may be expected which will start works that certainly will ease the heavy traffic and the traffic jams in the critical parts of the road“, the Prime Minister explained. Vehicles will go via Roudozem until the bypass is completed.
