Four helicopters and two airplanes to join firefighting operations under EU Civil Protection Mechanism

27.07.2025

Four helicopters from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and France and two airplanes from Sweden will join the firefighting operations on the territory of Bulgaria. This was announced by Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov. Bulgaria will be given assistance to extinguish the fires subject to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism that was made active yesterday. The Prime Minister stressed that the Protection Mechanism visibly works and that European solidarity on the part of the EU member states is set in motion instantly.

Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov again appealed to citizens to be careful when they handle fire hazards, especially around their homes, and to refrain from throwing away unextinguished cigarettes. “We have been repeating the measures for years, but still 95% of the fires are caused by human negligence,” said Rossen Jeliazkov.

Two helicopters of the Bulgarian Armed Forces equipped with the so called Bambi Bucket are engaged in firefighting operations today, in addition to fifty servicemen from the Bulgarian Army.

The situation is worst where three brush fires are raging: near Stroumyani, around Trun and in the vicinity of Lessovo. From Lessovo the fires moved into the territory of Türkiye. Firefighting operations are under way on both sides of the border.

“We have no reports about people or firefighters who lost their lives or were injured. The operating headquarters monitors the situation all the time,” Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov emphasized.
