
Prof. Dr. Georgi Valchev is the Rector of the Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, elected to the position in November 2023. He is an eminent scholar and expert in the field of cultural studies and history and has longstanding administration experience in the academia.
In 2015-2023 Prof. Valchev was the Vice Rector of Educational Affairs (PhD Studies and Continuing Education). His professional career with the Sofia University comprised, in addition, the positions of head of the Department of History and Theory of Culture (2011-2019) and Academic Secretary of the Faculty of Philosophy. Prof. Valchev is the founder and leading tutor of the Master’s Degree Program “Management and Socialization of Cultural Heritage”.
Prof. Valchev is the author of a number of noteworthy scholarly publications and monographs such as “History and Its Public Uses”, “Zahari Stoyanov and the Symbolic Capital of the Bulgarian Revival” and “Foreigners in Bulgarian Post-Liberation Culture”. His scholarly interests are focused on the public uses of history and the running of cultural processes.
Prof. Valchev holds Master’s Degrees in history and philosophy from the Sofia University. In 1998 he was awarded the educational and academic Doctor’s Degree at the Center for Cultural Studies. In 2023 he was elected professor at the University’s Department of History and Theory of Culture.
